GP Views - Dr Alseneid, Gulgong
While working in the hectic ED of Queen Mary’s Hospital, London a friend in Australia suggested a move to escape the gloomy weather and high-stress environment. Dr Alseneid has now been living and working in Gulgong for almost 8 years where he enjoys the green surrounds, relaxed lifestyle and proximity to Sydney. He initially worked for RaRMS and then took over management of the surgery in 2014. He has worked hard to improve the practice by increasing allied health and specialist services, recruiting two IMG doctors and moving to a larger building.
Dr Alseneid has an interest in treating chronic illness such as diabetes and asthma and also runs a weekly skin clinic for tumours and cancers. He feels the lengthy bureaucratic process to get new doctors from overseas needs to be addressed to improve services in regional NSW. Gulgong also struggles to achieve continuity of service from health professionals, with a paediatrician much needed in the area. A lack of imaging facilities at the hospital is also an ongoing concern for the region.

Young Women Invited to Have First Pap Test
GPs and other Pap test providers may experience an increase in the number of young women booking appointments to have their first Pap test as a result of the NSW Cervical Screening Program’s invitation project for never screeners. The project will run for three months commencing on 1 July 2016 whereby selected identified women in NSW aged 25-34 years who have not previously participated in cervical screening will receive a letter or email invitation encouraging them to have their first Pap test.

Directory to Link Hep C Patients to Your Practice
Revolutionary treatments for hepatitis C are now on the PBS and are prescribed by General Practitioners (in consultation with specialists). The drugs redefine hep C as a relatively easy-to-treat health condition. Hepatitis NSW has built an online web directory of GPs and pharmacies who are working with the new drugs to link patients with their local service providers. In the Western NSW PHN region we currently have just 24 GPs or chemists and need more. To be added to the directory email pharvey@hep.org.au

New Clinician 'Quicksteps' tool for Chronic Pain
Keeping up to date in the management of chronic pain can be challenging in a busy GP practice. The NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation has recently developed ‘Quicksteps’. This is an evidence based decision support tool that can be administered by a practice nurse or general practitioner during a consultation. It will guide the clinician to develop a GP management plan by following a series of yes/no questions. The website has been endorsed by the NSW Government for use in the management of chronic pain.

BCCs and the Dermatoscope Event
Western NSW PHN recently hosted a popular basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and the Dermatoscope CPD event in Dubbo. The Guest Speaker was Dr Steve Tomas, a local GP and Clinical Lecturer at the School of Rural Health, who provided a very practical and relevant update on BCC and the usefulness of using the dermatoscope as a tool for early detection and diagnosis. Participants were able to practice using a dermatoscope. Thank you to all that attended the event.
