The Western NSW PHN is pleased to partner with the National Asthma Council Australia to deliver an overview of asthma and spirometry for Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners.

Topics include asthma, medications, correct inhaler device use, written Asthma Action Plans, emergency management and spirometry.

Target Audience: Aboriginal Health Workers, Aboriginal Health Practitioners and Aboriginal Outreach Workers


  • 10.30am - Registration (morning tea provided)
  • 11.00am - Welcome and introductions
  • 11.20am - Asthma overview:

- Asthma management (asthma medications)
- Self-management (written Asthma Action Plans)

  • 12.00pm - Inhaler devices (inhaler use including demonstration)
  • 12.30pm - Lunch (provided)
  • 1.00pm - Spacers and Nebulisers; Asthma flare-ups
  • 1.30pm - Spirometry (indications, procedure, practical demonstration and quality assurance)
  • 2.30pm - Summing up (resources and final questions)
  • 2.45pm - Close and evaluation

Learning Outcomes:

  • Increase knowledge and awareness of asthma and its management, medications used for asthma/COPD, correct inhaler device use and asthma emergency treatment
  • Develop practical skills to teach correct device use
  • Increase confidence in managing patients with asthma
  • Increase knowledge and awareness of the role and performing of spirometry
