The Empowering our Communities grants program offers support to people and communities struggling with drought. The grants fund wellbeing initiatives, upskill workers in the delivery of mental health services and provide information and training to community leaders and members. Over the coming weeks and months the Western NSW Primary Health Network (PHN) will bring you stories of perseverance and resilience from some of the communities the program is supporting. 

Residents of the north-west are invited to a weekend of wellbeing at Rose Isle Station near Louth.

An initiative of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the weekend will be chock full of activities and entertainment.

“Rose Isle Station is a working sheep station and farm stay about 30 kilometres from Louth and 70 kilometres from Bourke,” organiser Susan Jordan said.

“The communities in that region have been badly affected by drought.”

Allied health professionals will provide services including foot, hearing and skin checks along with vision screening.

“There will also be yoga, mindfulness, massage and beauty therapy sessions,” Ms Jordan.

“There’ll be plenty of food – pizza and a barbecue – live entertainment, a yarning circle and kids’ activities as well.”

A fishing competition and bush poetry recital are also planned.

“It’s a beautiful venue on the river, with well-established gardens,” Ms Jordan said.

“People are welcome to come out for the day or camp for the whole weekend and it’s all absolutely free.”

The event will run from May 31 to June 2.
