Nurses and midwives play a crucial role in the prevention and management of blood borne viruses (BBVs) and sexually transmissible infections (STIs). 

This intermediate level course is designed for nurses and midwives who are already providing care for patients who have or are at risk of BBVs and STIs and want to build on their existing knowledge.

This course is particularly relevant for nurses working in, youth health, HIV, women’s health, midwifery and sexual health. 

Through case studies, presentations, group discussion and online learning modules the course will explore the nurse’s role in STI and BBV prevention, care and management.

Sessions include clinical presentation and management of STIs, advanced sexual health communication, stigma and discrimination, contact tracing, HIV and viral hepatitis overview and prevention.   

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the clinical presentation and nurse's role in managing STIs
  • Identify the priority populations for STI and BBV screening
  • Demonstrate confidence in discussing sexual health with patients
  • Describe contact tracing processes and feel confident in initiating contact tracing discussions with patients
  • Describe current HIV prevention methods
