GP Views - Dr Jenny Geraghty, Dubbo
Dr Geraghty has kindly agreed to be our first GP profiled in this segment to capture the experiences and opinions of practitioners in our region. She has been in Dubbo Since 1990, which is a great place to live, raise a family and work. Since 1991 she has been a part-time GP with Dr Jane Weyand at Macquarie Valley General Practice. Dr Geraghty also job shares with Dr Ai-Vee Chua as a Senior Lecturer in Community Medicine at the School of Rural Health, University of Sydney. Additionally, she is a part time VMO at Lourdes Hospital with a special interest in palliative care and regularly assists WNSW PHN with education planning. This variety of roles has made her work enjoyable and many of these great career opportunities have come about form living in Dubbo.
One of the most important issues Dr Geraghty has worked on in her career was part of the Joint Investigative Response Team for Child Sexual Assault, which she job shared with Dr Toni Medcalf. From her perspective as a GP, major health issues in the region are child safety and protection, obesity, Aboriginal health and Closing the Gap. These are multi-faceted problems and GPs have an important role to play in the complex response and management.

WNSW PHN consults with GPs across the region
During February WNSW PHN conducted a series of GP and community stakeholder consultations in Bathurst, Broken Hill, Bourke, Dubbo and Orange. GPs provided valuable insights on the health priorities in their area and issues affecting practitioners. The purpose of the consultations was to inform a ‘whole of region’ annual needs assessment and planning approach to progress and better target unmet health and healthcare needs in the region. Some of the key priorities GPs identified in this this process include:
- Access to professional development and training including greater alignment with GP Synergy’s procedural/rural generalist training
- Continued workforce and systems support including joint work with RDN on succession planning, and assistance with joint primary/secondary patient risk stratification processes
- Support for improved communication between GPs, specialists and other key health professionals, including how clinical pathways might assist this, as well as assistance with integrated care oriented networking events and telehealth/telemedicine development
- A better understanding and ongoing discussions regarding how the PHN could best target flexible funding for better community outcomes and care delivery closer to where people live in such a large region
Thank you to all that participated for their valuable contributions. A report will be published on our website soon. Contact Steve Mann, General Manager Planning and Partnerships,
