A new report on General Practice in the region has been released.

Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association’s General Practice in Western New South Wales, August 2018, has detailed analysis on the state of General Practice in the Western NSW PHN area.

The report shows that while the number of practices has increased the number of practitioners has decreased slightly. There are 108 general practices of which 20 are Aboriginal Medical Services.

The active patient population in WNSW PHN is approximately 160,000 – 170,000. Between 9 and 12 per cent identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. The population is ageing: around 10 per cent of the active patient population is aged 75 years and over. Approximately 6.5 per cent of patients are aged 1 year or younger.

The report states that areas for further development in the WNSW PHN region include encouraging greater use of tools to foster and monitor patient engagement, and provision of support for use of data such as clinical indicators and incident reporting as part of quality improvement.
