The Empowering our Communities grants program offers support to people and communities struggling with drought. The grants fund wellbeing initiatives, upskill workers in the delivery of mental health services and provide information and training to community leaders and members. Over the coming weeks and months the Western NSW Primary Health Network (PHN) will bring you stories of perseverance and resilience from some of the communities the program is supporting.

Outdoor cinema is coming to Brewarrina.

Brewarrina Shire Council will host a series of outdoor film nights to help build resilience and connect community, as the region struggles with severe drought.

“Everyone is so focused on feeding stock and keeping them alive. There aren’t many opportunities for people to come together,” council’s Jen Shearer said.

“The family movie nights are about community.”

Service providers will be on site to provide support, but Ms Shearer said the focus of the movie nights was re-connecting people.

“Services will be engaging with people, but it’s really about those peer-to-peer connections,” she said.

Ms Shearer said council was in the process of purchasing an outdoor movie screen, projector and other equipment.

“This is something we hope to continue well into the future,” she said.
