BE RARE AWARE: pre-pregnancy & early pregnancy screening.

Most pregnancies will end in a healthy baby without any medical intervention. In a small group of pregnancies complications can arise, this is usually independent of age and family history. The implication for the individual family is often far reaching. These rare outcomes are often difficult to predict, we now can however now screen for and create awareness about it, this lecture series will address this, it is aimed at a general audience to update midwives, registrars, OB/GYNs and Radiologists on current practice. It’s a fast-paced day, sticking to important take home messages.

At the end of this education, you will understand the following:

  • Who should we offer genetic carrier screening to?
  • How to identify a couple at risk of thalassemia
  • What is new in red cell antibodies?
  • Who should be offered CMV screening and what test should be used?
  • Standard vs extended (whole genome) NIPT
  • What are the implications of abnormal placental biomarkers, free B-human chorionic gonadotropin (<0.2 or ≥5.0 MoM) or very low PAPP-A levels (<0.2 MoM)
  • Baseline investigation in recurrent miscarriage What to look out for in monochorionic twin pregnancies
  • Endometriosis management
