WNSW PHN: Diabetes Education Workshop (Dubbo)

The Diabetes Education Workshop is on Thursday 21 March at Dubbo Zoo. It provides an opportunity to develop clinical management and education skills to support your patients living with diabetes and make connections with like-minded colleagues. Healthcare professionals pursuing diabetes education qualifications and Aboriginal health practitioners and Aboriginal health practitioners in Western and Far West NSW are invited to a free clinical skills workshop in Dubbo. The workshop is supported by the University of Technology Sydney, Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council of NSW, and the Care Partnership – Diabetes program.

The workshop will have a capacity for 30 participants who are interested in developing or refreshing diabetes clinical skills including:

  • Glucose monitoring – including flash and insulin injections
  • HbA1c testing
  • Conducting group diabetes education – with ‘Magnetic Man’
  • Cultural empathy in diabetes communication
  • Case studies involving patients with missed diabetes emergencies, and Low A1c

Dr Shannon Lin, Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian, Credentialled Diabetes Educator
Grace Ward, Aboriginal Health Practitioner, Diabetes Educator

Who is the workshop for?

Health professionals working or studying in Western or Far West NSW in the following categories are eligible to register:

  • Scholarship (CP-D or HWSP) recipients pursuing postgraduate courses in diabetes education – even if they haven't started the course
  • UTS Grad Cert Diabetes Education and Management students
  • Aboriginal health practitioners working in ACCHS, LHD, GP practice or other settings.

How do I get there?

Health professionals working in Western and Far West NSW, but not in the Dubbo area, can apply for a bursary to contribute to the cost of travel or accommodation to attend this session. Eligible health professionals that have registered for the event can seek a bursary by writing to WesternT2DM@nswrdn.com.au.

Whilst event planners will strive to support health professionals to attend, the provision of bursaries is subject to additional criteria and is not guaranteed.

Speakers

Marlene Payk

Marlene is a Nurse Practitioner working in both public and private practice. She has been working as a diabetes educator for 30 years and works with people with all types of diabetes. Marlene has completed a Professional Doctorate of Nurse Practitioner and her research focused on type 1 diabetes and insulin pump therapy. Marlene’s interest include the use of technology to assist with diabetes self-management. Marlene is an active member of the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA), mentoring new members embarking on obtaining their initial credentialing and she is current secretary of the NSW ADEA Branch and has previously held the position of NSW ADEA Branch chair.

Dr Shannon Lin

Dr Lin has been the Diabetes Course Director at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) for the past five years with a strong interest in diabetes workforce development. She is an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian (AdvAPD) and Credential Diabetes Educator (CDE) with about 20 years of experience. Her clinical areas have focused on type 2 diabetes management and prevention, especially in Indigenous health, by providing outreach clinics including western NSW, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities and aged care facilities. She received several awards for her teaching and research excellence, including the 2023 UTS Alumni Award – Faculty Award of Excellence in Health. Shannon was awarded the Jan Baldwin National CDE of the Year in 2023 and is the CDE Board Director of ADEA.
