Event presented by NSW Spinal Outreach Service & Rural Spinal Cord Injury Service.

In the general population, chronic pain is experienced by 20% of individuals and research demonstrates that this type of pain is best managed by a coordinated multidisciplinary approach with a strong focus on self-management.  After spinal cord injury the incidence of pain increases, with approximately 70% of individuals experiencing chronic pain of various types.  New resources have been developed by the NSW ACI Pain Management Network to assist clinicians to support their clients with chronic spinal cord injury-related pain.

This workshop will help you to understand how pain works and why chronic pain is different to acute pain. You will learn how medical, physical and psychological factors interact to contribute to the overall pain experience, and you will explore the reasons why a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of chronic pain is so important.  Most importantly you will get to add a range of practical new tools to your clinical toolkit to help your clients to manage their pain by helping them develop a pain management plan.
