How to de-prescribe and wean Opioids in General Practice?

Over the last 10-15 years many patients with chronic non-cancer pain, have been started on opioids to assist with pain management, unfortunately current evidence does not support the long-term prescription of opioids for this issue.

Targeted Audience:

GPs, Registrars, Nurses, Pharmacists, Medical Students, Specialists, Allied Health Professionals and other interested health professionals.

Learning Outcomes: 

  • At the end of the presentation, attendees will better understand the evidence for opioid prescribing in Acute pain, Chronic pain and Palliative care settings.
  • Attendees will learn a few key, clinically relevant pharmacology facts for the safe use of Fentanyl patches, Buprenorphine and methadone.
  • To participate in case studies about opioid reduction and strategies to utilize in their own practice.
  • To identify patients in their own practice that would benefit from opioid reduction and refer to chronic pain specialist or addiction specialist appropriately.
