Re-Thinking Dementia: A Well-Being Approach
Presented by: Dr G. Allen Power
Allen is an internist, geriatrician, and Schlegel Chair in Ageing and Dementia Innovation at the Schlegel-University of Waterloo Research Institute for Ageing in Ontario, Canada. He is also clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Rochester, NY, and an international educator on transformational models of care for older adults, particularly those living with changing cognitive abilities.
In this webinar Dr Power will explain the limitations of an overly narrow biomedical view of dementia. He will show how the BPSD paradigm is not only insufficient to address people's needs, but actually creates a barrier to inappropriate drug prescribing. At the same time, he will show how most ‘non-pharmacological interventions’ and the research studies investigating them also fall short of success.
Dr Power will introduce an alternate model, focusing on the individual experience and working with one widely-used framework to optimize several aspects of well-being for each individual. He will share a statewide application of this approach in the US that has shown dramatic success in reducing distress, medication use, and geri-psych transfers across nearly 100 care homes.
